Container Garden Adventurer
Whether you are a lifelong gardener or you have never even tended to a pot of flowers, you'll find raising your own fresh foods in containers a wonderful adventure.
Hi, I'm Donna, lifelong gardener and container garden adventurer.
Now, I have not always gardened, nor always in containers. While I have gardened on and off my entire adult life, there have been gaps between some of my gardens.
I've had failures and successes just like everyone else when it came to growing my backyard gardens. And I still do have some failures from time to time.
I was not raised in a gardening family. I didn't have any idea where food actually came from till I was about 10 or 11 years old.
At that time my family moved into a little house with a long narrow backyard in the the city. What was unique about this home was that the backyard came with two dwarf peach trees and a grape arbor.
No one in our family knew anything about gardening. I was fascinated with the idea that our backyard fruit orchard actually produced fruit.
This was the first time I can remember picking something off the plant it grew on and taking a bite.
Hmmm, what incredible tastes these fruits had. Nothing like the peaches and grapes mom brought home from the grocery.
We even had some friends one year pick that grape arbor clean and turn gallons upon gallons of grapes into the most delicious grape jam ever.
We only lived there a few summers, then moved to a home with no such delicacies growing in the yard.
It wasn't until my early adult years that I had a place of my own and decided I wanted to enjoy incredibly fresh flavors again.
Over the years I have had traditional inground gardens. Some in my own yard and some in borrowed yards.
I had my first experiment with container gardening when my daughter and I moved into an end townhouse that had a small back porch. There I got the idea that I could grow a tomato plant or two in a pot on that back stoop.
My results were a bit shaky as I didm't understand the differences growing in a pot versus growing inground would have on my plants.
Fast forward several years later, I found myself on a beautiful property with lots of space for a garden.
So, of course, I went about setting up a new garden. I dug up a few inground beds only to find lots of rock. So I set up a few raised beds.
This seemed to go along great until I discovered that deer loved my garden just as much as I did. You see this was the first time I lived outside the city. So, sharing my land with deer was a new experience.
After several years of little success in protecting my garden beds from these beautiful, yet annoying creatures, I gave up gardening. It seemed the only thing that was going to keep them out was a 10' tall brick wall.
For years I only dreamed of having a garden full of fresh delicious vegetables.
Then one day while at a crafts fair with my daughter, we came across a vendor selling heirloom tomato plants. I couldn't resist. I had been hearing a bit about growing vegetables in pots. So I decided I could try to grow some of these beautiful plants on my patio in some sort of pot.
I've been growing in containers ever since.
My garden has expanded from those few pots on the patio to include a fenced area (actually a 6' tall dog pen) in the yard, the patio, the deck, the landing off the deck, hanging baskets, the kitchen counter, the floor in the family room - pretty much anywhere I can set a container.
I have grown hundreds of pounds of fresh delicious fruits and vegetables this way for years now.
During 2020 with the COVID 19 shutdowns, I was saddened watching truckloads of fresh food simply being trashed. Then there was the onslaught of shortages of certain foods, especially fresh foods. Fortunately, my gardens kept my family well fed.
I started sharing more and more with family and friends how I was growing my garden in containers during this time.
I frequently had neighbors who were out walking stop to ask questions about my garden set up. Now many of them have since started their very own container gardens.
And now I want to share this easy and fun way to garden with you.
I hope that you join me on this container garden adventure as we share, learn and grow incredible fresh, delicious and nutritious foods together.
Sow & Grow,
Donna
